She said she new i was a carer for my husband but did i sit around all day and blog and just go on the Internet etc...
So Maxie i shall answer your question here for all to see :~
being a full time carer is a lot of work. I do get times i just want to walk away and say "That's enough"
My day normally starts off early at 6am i make my coffee and do posts ,check email and other things.
Dion wakes at around 7 or 8am ish i make him coffee and take it to him. Sometimes he needs a good massage on his back, legs etc
I run him a bath with caster oil as it keeps things down like his nerve system and so on....
I help him dress we chat he can walk OK still but gets tired allot and he is always sore.
By lunchtime ~ Depends on what kind of day he's having if he can do small things otherwise i put him back to bed for a few more hours. Then i go and do errands or what ever i need to do for those few hours.
Some days are harder than others but lately it's pretty good . But he does have times he is pretty bad and just can not move at all. I interviewed him a while back you can read it HERE and HERE and HERE
Yes i get a carers pension but it's not much and i work hard for the pittance i do get paid but that's life i guess!
I make all his appointments to the psychologist,Doctors etc... Sometimes it's hard to talk to him as he is on a different level to me .He has high function autism. He gets very frustrated if you don't pay attention etc...
So Maxie its not all fun and games being a carer at all . I know other carers would agree with me.
I am very happy last night i joined a wonderful group for carers (just my space) maybe chat about the day i had or be able to rant etc.... if i can't chat to Dion and need a friend's advice some one who can really understand where i am coming from.

ReplyDeleteAnd me? I am glad to read you on this next to last day of the Ultimate Blog Challenge!
I know mny folks who are carers...life for the folks they care for and about would be so so different without them but it's hard even on good days. I am glad you are connecting with a group of other carers. Sharing stories both the good and the bad can help everyone get to the next day. :)
ReplyDeleteWow. That sounds like hard work. It's amazing how sometimes we just 'get up and do it' because that's what we do. Looking forward to following more.

Wow Dannie - I didn't know you cared for your husband. He is very lucky to have you caring for him. I would never undervalue the role of a carer - it is hard work. BTW - I understand high functioning autism. I have a son with Aspergers. He is a uni student now and doing well. I think you having a blog is a great thing. Your space, your therapy and release etc. xo
ReplyDeleteFull time carer for Master 7 who has ASD but that may change in the future due to my own health issues. That just means the other half will need to take over those duties as well as caring for me!
